Sky: Children of the Light

Free

From the studio behind Journey: a free, wordless world where friendship is literally a mechanic, and a phone is as good a way in as a console.

Sky is a game about flying through beautiful places with other people. You play a small caped figure, you collect light, you unlock the ability to glide further, and you meet strangers who appear as grey silhouettes until you offer them a candle. Do that and they become a friend you can hold hands with, fly beside and, eventually, talk to. There is no combat, no score and nobody to defeat.

Because of that, it suits a very different kind of group from the rest of the list: a couple in different cities, a parent and adult child, a friend who has moved abroad, or a group who want something to do with their hands while they talk on a call. Playing together means exploring the same realm at the same time, helping each other through puzzles that need two, and sitting on a bench with the game’s emotes while the conversation happens elsewhere.

thatgamecompany brought it from phones to Switch, PlayStation and, in 2024, PC, with one account across all of them and full cross-play. It runs comfortably on a mid-range phone. Seasons add stories, cosmetics and a paid pass, but the world itself is entirely free and a player who never spends anything misses only outfits.

It is not a game for a group that wants a target. The friend system is odd at first, communication is limited until you have spent candles on each other, and a full party of eight is more of a flock than a team. Judge it as what it is: the calmest way on this site to be somewhere with someone.

What works

  • Free, on phones and consoles alike, with one account
  • Built around doing things together, gently
  • Fits any session length, no penalties for leaving
  • Beautiful, and calm enough for people who dislike games

What to know first

  • The friend system is confusing on the first evening
  • No voice chat and limited text
  • Little to do for a group that wants a challenge

The first evening: four things to do

  1. Meet at the Home space and add each other by code

Friend codes are the reliable way to find a specific person. Scan or type it, then light the candle to make the friendship real.

  2. Hold hands to fly together

A newcomer with no wing power can be carried anywhere by a friend who has some. It is the whole game’s idea in one gesture.

  3. Do the Isle of Dawn and Daylight Prairie first

The opening realms teach the controls and hand out enough light to get around. Save the darker realms for a second evening.

  4. Play on whatever device is nearest

Phone on the sofa, PC at the desk: it is one account. Do not wait for everyone to own the same hardware.

In play

  • Caped children walking through a field of flowers
  • A player at a lantern-lit market stall
  • A glowing spirit beside blossoming branches

Verdict

Not the game for a Friday with the lads. Exactly the game for a Sunday with someone far away. Free, kind and quietly excellent.

Best for: Two people who want somewhere to be together while they talk.
